INDIGO

INDIGO makes UIC's scholarly INtellectual property in DIGital form available online in an Open environment. Indigo is also a UIC official color.

INDIGO collects, disseminates, and provides persistent and reliable access to the research and scholarship of faculty, staff, and students at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Faculty, staff, and students can deposit their research and scholarship - unpublished and, in many cases, published - directly into INDIGO. Departments can use INDIGO to distribute their working papers, data sets, technical reports, or other research material. Contact us for more information (indigo@uic.edu).

The University Library supports publishing and scholarly communication through this repository and through our journal publishing platform Journals@UIC. These are part of the library's efforts to support Digital Scholarship.

All theses and dissertations deposited from Fall 2011 onward are available in INDIGO.

• Dissemination: Because access to INDIGO is open, your work will be disseminated to people in more places, which will increase the availability of your research and UIC’s research.

• Extend Your Impact: Making your work available in more places to more people will extend the potential impact of your research.

• Increased Indexing: The Open Archives Initiative (OAI) was developed by librarians to share meta-data which makes it possible to disseminate content into large databases, increasing accessibility to information. OIA Harvesters (like http://oaister.org/ and Google Scholar) are indexing your work, increasing the likelihood others will find it, thus increasing its availability and potential impact.

• Preservation: Because of the library’s commitment to preserving your digital content, you and your colleagues can access submitted material from anywhere in the world for years to come.

• Access to journals is declining: Because of the increased costs of purchasing journals (online and in print), libraries continue to have to cancel journal subscriptions. Putting your material in INDIGO will allow you an opportunity to provide others access to work, regardless of what journal subscriptions another researcher may be able to access.

• Compliance with grant and / or journal requirements.:  Depositing your data into INDIGO enables you to demonstrate compliance with funding agency requirements to share and archive your data sets.  [Please see Using INDIGO for grant data.]

• Get credit for your work — A Digital Object Identifier  (DOI) will be assigned to your work upon deposit making it easier for people to cite your work or data set and provide proper attribution.

Copyright Requirements for Submission:

• There are two essential activities related to the copyright of documents submitted to INDIGO.

1. The submitter must be the copyright owner or must have permission from the copyright owner to deposit the material into INDIGO. No material may be deposited where doing so is prohibited under existing copyright agreements.
   • PLEASE NOTE: In most cases, publishers will only allow you to post the final peer reviewed manuscript of your publication.    This is typically the final version you provided to the publisher post peer review.   Most publishers will not allow the publisher PDF to be uploaded unless it is an open access journal or you have paid to make the article openly accessible.  Publisher PDFs where copyright clearly belongs to the publisher will not be approved.
2. The submitter must also have the right to grant the UIC Library the non-exclusive right to Preserve and disseminate the material.

The intent of INDIGO is to make scholarly materials directly related to scholarship available to others.    There are times because of privacy and HIPAA concerns, it is not possible to attach a data file to INDIGO.  Metadata only records are reserved for datasets when it is not possible due to privacy concerns or other requirements to upload the dataset directly into INDIGO.   The intent of the Metadata only records is to make others aware of the availability of the data, while not providing direct access to the data.  See the Metadata Only Records tab for more information on how to upload metadata only records for datasets.

Metadata only records for formats other than datasets (i.e. links to full-text of publications on other websites) will generally not be approved.   

Pre-prints may be uploaded to INDIGO.   However, please not that most publishers require that the pre-print be replaces by the post-print when the article is published.  Please be prepared to upload revised manuscripts once an article is published, and to update the metadata related to the article.
