Scalar: Pages

Creating a New Page

From the book page, you can select the plus sign icon on the top bar to create a new page. Once you are on a new page, you can fill in the title, description, and content for your page.

Adding Media to a Page

To add media, you will select an option from the blue icons in the top bar of the text box.

From left to right:

  • You use the play icon with no box around it to link media to a portion of your text. This works similarly to hyperlinks but the media will appear on the same page as your text. To do this, you highlight the portion of your text that you would like to link to the media and then select the play button. It will guide you to customize where and how you would like the media to appear on the page.
  • If you would like the media to appear on the page but you do not want to link it to any text or you would not like any text on this page at all, you can use the play icon with the box around it.
  • You can use the next two speech bubble icons to add a "note" to your page. Again, you will use the icon without the box to attach the note to a portion of text and the icon with the box to add the note alone. A "note" is an embedded view of a different page within your Scalar book and works similarly to a footnote.
  • The puzzle-piece icons allow you to input "widgets," which are advanced features such as maps or timelines. As with the others, the icon without a box links to a portion of text and the icon with the box stands alone.
  • The blue link icon allows you to link to another page of your Scalar book but unlike the "note" feature, it only gives the title and description of the page.
  • The grey link icon allows you to link to any page on the internet using a URL.

Customizing a Page

Once you have added the content to your page, you have several options for customization.

Layout: Most likely, the Basic Layout will serve most of your needs as it is inherently customizable. However, there are many additional options for customization. Another useful layout is "Splash" or "Book Splash," which is a common layout for the home screen.

Relationships: This is where you will be able to add paths and tags, as well as annotations or comments. See the "Paths and Tags" page of this guide for more information.

Styling: There are several things you can do under the styling tab but an important one to note is "Key Image." If you are using the "Splash" layout, you will need to upload the primary image to "Key Image" instead of adding it to the text box.

Properties: Under the properties tab, you can edit the page URL and whether the page is hidden or visible.

Metadata: If there is additional metadata you need to add, you can do that from the metadata tab.
