RefWorks and Other Citation Management Tools

RefWorks is a reference management system that supports citation management, research collaboration, in-text citation, and the creation of bibliographies. It is a cloud-based application that is free for UIC students, faculty, and staff.

RefWorks allows you to:

• Organize your resources in projects and folders
• Create formatted reference lists and annotated bibliographies in a variety of citation styles
• Import citations directly from library databases as well as Google Scholar
• Access your sources directly within Microsoft Word
• Share citations and source lists

To create in-text citations you'll need either the RCM plugin or Write-n-Cite, depending on your operating system and version of Word.

Does the library offer workshops on RefWorks?

Yes, though not on a set schedule. We can do workshops by request, and we are also available for one-on-one appointments. See the Workshop Schedule or schedule an appointment here.

Can I keep my account after I graduate?

Yes. To keep your account after graduation, simply e-mail us with a new e-mail address so that your account doesn't expire when your UIC e-mail does.
