Spring 2025 Workshops

Digital Publishing at UIC. Open Access Publishing, Digital Publishing, and Data Sharing options through the University Library

This workshop will cover the basics of the library’s digital publishing platforms: INDIGO, DigitalUIC, and Journals@UIC.

  • Use INDIGO, UIC's open access Institutional Repository, to publish working papers, data sets, technical reports, published article manuscripts, presentations, department and/or group projects, and other scholarly materials.  Like content or research output can be grouped together through Projects or Collections within INDIGO.  INDIGO can also be used to create records about data sets that are stored elsewhere (privacy or size limitations) to increase discoverability for reuse. About INDIGO: https://researchguides.uic.edu/indigo/about
  • Use Digital UIC to support research, teaching, professional portfolios, and learning at UIC through flexible web space and customizable platforms. Digital UIC allows users to easily install several popular open-source applications such as WordPress, Scalar, Omeka, Grav, and more.  About Digital UIC: https://researchguides.uic.edu/digital-uic
  • Use Journals@UIC to publish an open access journal.  Journals@UIC provides the storage, software, and article review management tools required for scholars to host and publish their own open access scholarly journals. Journals@UIC accepts both new journals and existing journals. About Journals@UIC: https://researchguides.uic.edu/journalsuic
  • APC Waivers: An overview of open-access publishing support through the Library’s Read and Publish contracts, which cover publishers' APC charges for open-access articles, will also be provided.   About UIC’s Open Access Fee Waivers and Reductions: https://researchguides.uic.edu/sc/apcs

Scholarly Publishing: Selecting scholarly publishing venues to maximize your impact while avoiding “predatory publishers”

Do you wonder how to select a journal in which to publish or wonder about the quality of a journal?  This session will demonstrate tools to identify potential journals in your field, how to explore impact metrics for journals (JIF, SJR, CiteScore), how to find where a journal is indexed for dissemination, and tools to evaluate the quality of journals.  Many reputable, peer-reviewed Open Access journals are available, but so are “predatory publishers” that charge publication fees but do little in terms of peer review. Tips and tools to identify legitimate open-access and subscription-based journals and avoid predatory publishers will be covered.

Creating Biosketches for NSF & NIH using SciENcv

NIH and NSF both require Biosketches, which must be created using SciENcv in MyNCBI.

This workshop will guide you step-by step through:

  • how to create/ update an ORCID iD from various sources (e.g. Scopus)
  • how link your ORCID profile to your SciENcv (for publications not in PubMed)
  • how to create and export your biosketch using SciENcv for NIH or NSF  (and other agencies)

The new NIH biosketch, part of the Common Forms for Biographical Sketch and Current and Pending (Other) Support, will be available in SciENcv on March 25, 2025, for use in applications and Research Performance Progress Reports (RPPRs) with due dates on or after May 25, 2025.

Bibliometric Visualization of Research

Are you interested in a closer analysis of who is citing your work or the work of your research team?  Do you wonder if there researchers at specific institutions citing the work of you or your department?  Do you want to see who is collaborating on specific types of research?   This workshop will provide an introduction to VOSviewer for analyzing and visualizing bibliometric networks.     VOSviewer is a free open access software tools created by CWTS at Leiden University.   In addition, this workshop will cover: what are bibliometrics, network visualization options found in Scopus and Web of Science, and an overview of other impact metrics.
