Welcome to the research guide for Black Studies at UIC! This research guide is designed to be a tool in conducting research in Black Studies.
The department of Black Studies' curriculum revolves around four key areas of interest and expertise: 1. Black Queer and Feminist Studies, 2. Cultural Production and Analysis, 3. Diasporic and Transnational Studies, and 4. Race, Politics and Institutions. As such, the guide is broken into sections to help support these themes along with providing other helpful tools and resources.
Black Studies is an interdisciplinary field of study—this does not mean a simple mixing or borrowing of traditional disciplines but rather the field operates outside or beyond fields like history, psychology, or literature. The program explores the histories and cultures, the social and economic issues and the political processes that have shaped the experiences of African-descended people in the United States, Africa, and the global dispersal of persons of African descent including the Caribbean, Latin America, and Europe.
I am available to assist with research needs on an individual basis. Please feel free to email me and I am happy to schedule a time with you. Consults can be done in person, via zoom or email.
