An Introduction to the NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy

Effective for Grant Proposals Starting January 25, 2023


The National Institutes of Health is implementing a new Data Management and Sharing Policy goes into effect for grants submitted January 25, 2023 and thereafter.  After that date, applications for funding must include:

  • A Data Management and Sharing Plan which outlines how scientific data and any accompanying metadata will be managed and shared, taking into account any potential restrictions or limitations.

  • Budgeting information for the managing, preserving, and sharing data
