An Introduction to the NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy

Effective for Grant Proposals Starting January 25, 2023


The National Institutes of Health is implementing a new Data Management and Sharing Policy goes into effect for grants submitted January 25, 2023 and thereafter.  After that date, applications for funding must include:

  • Data Management and Sharing Plan which outlines how scientific data and any accompanying metadata will be managed and shared, taking into account any potential restrictions or limitations.

  • Budgeting information for the managing, preserving, and sharing data

NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy
This is the final data management and sharing policy that was released on October 29, 2020. It goes into effect on January 25, 2023.
NIH Data Sharing Site
This website, provided and maintained by the NIH, gives links and recommendations related to the new NIH DMS Policy.
NIH Public Access Policy
The NIH Public Access Policy requires scientists to submit final peer-reviewed journal manuscripts that arise from NIH funds to PubMed Central immediately upon acceptance for publication-- without delay or embargos. This Policy is effective for manuscripts accepted for publication on or after July 1st, 2025, regardless of award date. Find the acceleration announcement here.
