English 161: Writing about Corporations: Grey Literature

What is grey literature?

Governments, think-tanks, academic organizations, non-profits, and businesses often release research studies online and in in print on their own authority and not through commercial publishers. The quality of the research may be high, but it is always important to understand the perspective of the organization that produces it.

The best way to identify grey literature is through the organization that released it -- look for references to reports in published articles, and especially in newspapers.

Another strategy is to search Google with a domain type limit, such as site:.org or site:.gov
