Editing UICOMP DES Templates in PowerPoint 2010

Begin by choosing a DES template that you like and picking the version with the logo(s) that you need.  The background and logo(s) cannot be changed in the templates.  Save this template.

Editing Content:

-Click in the text box

-Simply highlight the existing text and type over it with your content

-Resize boxes by clicking on the box and placing your cursor over a corner mark; ‘click and drag’ the box to the proper size

-Move boxes by clicking on the box and placing your cursor over the box until you see a four-way arrow; then ‘click and drag’ the box

Changing Fonts:

-Click in the text box & highlight the text to be changed

-Click on the Home tab

-Select your font style from the list (remember that Sans serif fonts work best for titles and headers)

-Select your font size from the list (remember that bigger is usually easier to read)

-Choose font options like bold or colors (remember italics and underlining are harder to read and sometimes confusing)

Removing/Adding Extra Text Boxes:

-Click on the text box (you will see a dashed outline)

-Click on the dashed line until it becomes solid

-To remove - Use either the Cut or Delete function to remove the box (you may need to repeat this to remove the header box too)

-To add – Use the Copy function; then click outside of the box and use Paste; move the new box and edit the content

Inserting Visual Elements:

-Boxes for images, charts, etc. are text boxes too, so the same editing instructions apply

-Know where your image, chart, etc. has been saved

-Insert visual elements by using the Insert tab

-Select from picture, chart, etc.

-You can also use the paste function to insert items

Helpful Hints from DES

  • Any chart and/or graph that is created in PowerPoint will likely print more sharply than one imported from another program.

  • If you prefer a color logo for your institution(s), contact Mary Jean Dzurisin, and she will send you an image that you can place in the poster which will print well.

  • DES has two sizes available for posters: '36 inches by ___' and '42 inches by ___'.  These sizes are based on the physical limitations of the two roll sizes of the poster printing stock.  DES templates will work with either of these sizes, but please be aware of these size limitations if you create your own template.
  • Mac users - DES recommends that you make a pdf of your finished poster file to send to Mary Jean for printing.

Creating Your Own Templates

In PowerPoint 2010, start with a blank slide.

- Change the dimensions: Design > Page Setup

- Choose ‘Slides Sized for Custom’, Width= 36” & Height=18”, Landscape orientation

- Add your own boxes for the banner, headings, and section text: Insert > text box

- Click in box to use Drawing Tools Format

DES cannot guarantee the ability to print posters that are not done with their templates.
