Healthy Habits

Being a medical student is hard work. There is a lot to learn to become a doctor. Students will spend about 60 hours each week just studying!

Our students are busy, but they make time for Healthy Habits. They play tennis or baseball, choose fruits and veggies, and drink lots of water.

Hopefully you will learn some Healthy Habits today too!

Question 1

Meet a Pediatrician

Dr. Amy Christison is a pediatrician. A pediatrician is a doctor that takes care of kids and teens. Pediatricians teach kids and families how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Many diseases can be prevented by having a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle includes eating healthy, balanced meals and being physically active one hour per day.

Q. How does a pediatrician help kids that are not sick?

A. “Pediatricians promote health and wellness by giving vaccines, working with families to have a healthy lifestyle, and sharing tips about safe practices like buckling up in the car or wearing bike helmets. We also encourage our patients to talk about their feelings in a safe place like the doctor’s office, with a trusted teacher or coach, or with a trusted family member.”

Q. How can kids “take charge of their health”?

A. “Kids can take charge of their health by choosing to eat healthy -  eating more fruits and veggies and drinking less soda and more water. They can ask their doctor about what concerns them the most. If they are taking medicine, they should know what the medicine is for and make sure they follow the doctor’s directions.”

Q. What else should kids know?

A. “Pediatricians are on your side.  We want to help treat you when you are sick, but most of all, we want to prevent you from getting sick in the first place. We are available to share information that will help you maintain a healthy life and a strong body now and in the future. We want to be a trusted adult in your life that you can feel free to talk to about anything. Our main role is your well-being and safety.”
