Communication Studies: COMM 491

This guide provides information on how to do library research in Communication Studies using resources available to students staff and faculty at UIC.

Key Databases for Research on Frame Analysis

Build lists of keywords and synonyms

Combine the formal subject headings above with as many synonyms as possible for your topic:

  • Use * at the end of a word stem to get any ending
    • discriminat* = discriminate, discriminating, discrimination
  • Combine terms with OR to get more results
    • racism OR discriminat* OR bias OR prejudice*
  • Examine search results to find more terms, especially in the abstract and Subjects list

Use limits to focus your search

Try different ways to narrow a search:

  • Document type (e.g., Academic journals)
  • Year (e.g., last 10 years)
  • Specific journals (search in the Source or Publication dropdown field, depending on the database):
    • Journal of Communication
    • Critical Studies in Media Communication
    • Journalism
    • New Media & Society
    • Political Communication
    • Public Opinion Quarterly

UIC Library can get you any article you need - don't skip over good options just because there is no PDF:

  • Set up your ILLiad account - you'll need your Library number from your iCard (it starts with 28198).
  • Follow the "Find it @ UIC" link.
  • If you don't see the PDF, scroll down to "Request via inter library loan" (skip over the "Sign in" option).
  • You will get an email when the PDF is posted to your ILLiad account, usually within a day.
  • There is no charge for ILLiad requests.

If these strategies don't lead to useful articles, contact me by email - there are plenty more strategies we can try.
