Maps Produced By The U.S. Government

The United States government is a significant producer of maps. This guide covers the major types of maps produced and how best to access them in print or online.

Various agencies produce maps. Under the Department of the Interior, this includes the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Bureau of Reclamation, United States National Park Service, and the Fish and Wildlife Service; the United States Forest Service under the Department of Agriculture (USDA); the United States Department of Defense, which includes the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA); the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) within the U.S. Department of Commerce; the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) under the Department of Transportation (DOT); and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)—and this list is far from comprehensive.

This guide covers the most requested resources from the USGS, BLM, National Park Service, Forest Service, NOAA, FAA, and the CIA World Factbook. In addition, a few Illinois state resources are included, such as Illinois Department of Transportation Highway Maps and the Illinois State Geological Survey.
