From Hack to Herzog: Pre-Production/Planning

Supporting research based documentaries

Scaffolding Documentary Projects

Breaking up documentary production assignments into multiple phases allows instructors to provide formative assessment during multiple phases of the project, and strengthen the quality of the final project by checking student's work before the final project is completed and assessed.

1. Research

This phase includes topic exploration, gathering and analysis of evidence, and development of research questions.  Librarians work with instructors to support students in all aspects of this process. Please contact your library laison to collaborate on assignment design, or to set up a library instruction session.

2. Treatment

During this phase, students develop a "pitch" for their film which includes:

  • compelling theme
  • appropriate narrative structure
  • a probing question to explore

The treatment also includes an overall outline for the film which lays out the sequence of ideas and architecture of the film.

3. Storyboarding

In this stage, students embellish the treatment to include the following elements for each frame of the movie:

  • visuals
  • sound
  • narration
  • effects
