UIC Library Faculty Profile: Abigail Goben, MLS: About

Abigail Goben joined the University of Illinois-Chicago Health Sciences Library in December 2010. Her primary liaison responsibilities are to the College of Dentistry and the Institute for Juvenile Research.

Goben earned her Masters in Library Science from St. John's University in Queens in 2005. She also holds a Bachelor's Degree in English from Long Island University: C.W. Post Campus.  She is a member of the Research Data Access and Preservation Group, American Library Association, the Library and Information Technology Association, the Association for College and Research Libraries, the Medical Library Association Midwest Chapter, the American Dental Education Association, the Library Society of the World, and the Code4Lib Community.

My scholarly activity currently focuses on research data management education; institutional and journal policies surrounding research data; copyright knowledge in the health science disciplines; and student perceptions of learning analytics. A past project, the creation of the ACRL Research Data Management Roadshow curriculum, has led to a current project assessing the impact of the workshop and liaison librarian's knowledge, behavior, and attitudes surrounding research data services.

My collaborative research activities presently include narrative and scoping reviews of health science literature to meet educational and policy questions; comparative analysis of funding and research impact; and implementation of federated search tools.

I am a co-investigator and project manager for the IMLS funded Data Doubles collaborative.

I am the course creator and instructor for LIB 573: Introduction to Research Data Management, which provides a foundational background in RDM and provides opportunities for students to engage with data across disciplinary boundaries. My other coursework includes Evidence Based Practice instruction for the College of Dentistry for pre-doctoral and the advanced standing dental degrees and instruction in several informatics programs.

As an Information Services Librarian I provide reference and research support to health sciences faculty and students though a variety of in person and online venues, including classroom instruction and individual consultations. I am also currently participating in initiatives to facilitate management, preservation and expanded use of research data as these areas grow in relevance to our research community.

Currently, I am serving as the Chair of the Nominations Committee for the Library Information Technology Association, which is a division of the American Library Association. Further I am a member of the Association for College and Research Libraries; the Research Data Access Preservation Group; the Midwest Chapter of the Medical Library Association; the American Dental Education Association; the Library Society of the World; and the Code4Lib National, Midwest, and Chicago communities.

At UIC, in addition to peer mentoring, some of my service includes:

  • UI Health Guidelines and Protocols Oversight Committee January 2013-present
  • Scholarly Communications Committee (appointed) September 2011-present
  • Library Data Management Task Force (appointed) June 2012-present
