Technical Standards: Standard Equivalents: What Are They?

What is an equivalent standard?

Equivalent standards are standards that are adopted by a different Standard Development Organization (SDO) . Equivalent standards typically adopt the same name and have the same text. In other words, they are the same standard. If we do not have access to the original standard, citing an equivalent standard for school purposes is typically sufficient. The only time you will need access to the exact standard would be for legal or patent purposes, or if you needed to access a historical version of a standard.

We have access to the UNE collection, which is a collection of adopted standards from the Spanish Association of Standardization, and contains a large amount of ISO adopted standards. For example, UNE-EN ISO 13485:2018 Medical devices - Quality management systems - Requirements for regulatory purposes (ISO 13485:2016 is the equivalent of ISO 13485:2016 Medical devices — Quality management systems — Requirements for regulatory purposes.

Notice UNE-EN was added before the original standard title, but otherwise the title is exactly the same. If we do not have access to the original standard, try searching in ASTM to see if we have access to the equivalent.
