NSF Data Management and Sharing Plan: Start Here

An Introduction to the NSF Data Management and Sharing Policy

The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) requires all grant proposals to include a data management and sharing plan (DSMP).  It describes how a proposal will follow NSF policy on managing, disseminating and sharing research results. This guide will provide resources, examples, and tutorials.

  • Data Management and Sharing Plan which outlines how scientific data and any accompanying metadata will be managed and shared, taking into account any potential restrictions or limitations.

  • Budgeting information for the managing, preserving, and sharing data

NSF Data Management and Sharing Policy

NSF-funded investigators are expected to share with other researchers, at no more than incremental cost and within a reasonable time, the primary data, samples, physical collections and other supporting materials created or gathered in the course of work under NSF awards.
