What is Mukurtu?

Mukurtu is a free and open source content management system and community access platform. It was built on the Drupal content management system with the specific needs of Indigenous communities in mind, particularly in trying to answer the question of how to translate the physical permissions, protocols, and information of heritage objects into the digital. With Mukurtu, Indigenous communities, as well as libraries, archives, and museums can curate, share, and manage digital heritage materials. Mukurtu provides the tools and features for these communities to decide how and what content and information should be available and to who. Mukurtu is one part of a larger digital preservation ecosystem and is managed by the Center for Digital Scholarship and Curation at Washington State University.

UIC faculty, students, and staff can install and use Mukurtu through Digital UIC.
