Application Details

In order to participate in this study and program, you must meet requirements and complete an application. 

Program participants must: 

· Be a graduate student at UIC

· Be studying a STEM or Health Science discipline

· Actively pursuing a research project not associated with coursework. 

· Be able to meet for 90 minutes, once a week, for 8 weeks (Sessions will run from June 17 through August 12. See schedule below for weekly topics.

Program Description

This program is part of a research study designed to help students learn data management best practices and implement them. The study consists of eight (8) weeks of flipped classroom instruction. Materials will be given to participants outside of session to read and review. Session time will be dedicated to facilitating discussion, answering questions, and directing activities that guide participants in implementing them into their research workflow. Participants will be expected to participate in sessions, complete all surveys, and document their implementation progress. 

Participants will be compensated $150 (total) for their time: first after the pre-test, again after the program and post-test, and last at the 6 month follow up. 

Program content is outlined as follows: 

  • Week 1 beginning June 17: Introduction to Data management
  • Week 2 beginning June 24: Discipline standards, Data management plan document started
  • (July 1st week skipped)
  • Week 3 beginning July 8: Mapping your research project
  • Week 4 beginning July 15: Folder structure and documentation
  • Week 5 beginning July 22: File naming, tables of contents, and indexes
  • Week 6 beginning July 29: Templates and SOPs
  • Week 7 beginning Aug 5: Data management Plan document finalized
  • Week 8 beginning Aug 12: Sustainability and Personal policy

The summer session is accepting 30-40 students.
