English 160 &161: Introduction to Library Research

Why cite?

Why do you need to cite your sources? There actually IS a reason!

Citing sources gives credit to other people whose ideas you've used and allows readers to find the sources you've consulted. Following citations is a great way for you to find additional sources for your research. Watch this short video to learn more.

Citation Styles

Different disciplines use different citation styles. The most common styles are MLA, APA, and Chicago; your professor will specify which style to use. The library has several citation guides, and there are also useful websites to visit for more information.

For all styles: Purdue Owl (online writing lab)

For MLA: MLA Style Center

UIC Writing Center

Writing is one of the most important skills that students take away from college. To help students learn about writing, UIC offers a special free resource, a peer writing center, where students work with other students to improve as writers.
