E-books 101: ProQuest E-book Central

Comparison of UIC E-book platforms for how much one can print, download, and view on a mobile device

ProQuest E-book Central

Ebook Central offers Single Sign On (SSO) -- users sign in just once using their existing credentials to both gain access to the Ebook Central site and to sign into their personal account.

Use Ebook Central to:

  • Quickly and easily find relevant ebooks and chapters;
  • Read online;
  • Search within the ebook;
  • Highlight, take notes and bookmark pages in your online copy, stored on your bookshelf for you.

You can also share your research with others, download ebooks and chapters to your laptop or mobile device, and more.

When you download pages or chapters, you get a PDF file that doesn't expire. You can search the text, and copy passages for use in your research, along with a citation in the format of your choice. The number of pages you can download shares the same allowance as what you can print to PDF.  In some cases of limited availability on a book, your institution may limit the full book download.

To download the entire book, you'll need Adobe Digital Editions on laptop/desktop, or Bluefire Reader on tablets and phones. You need an Adobe ID to use Bluefire Reader and also if you wish to transfer an ebook to another device. Your library determines the download periods available to you, which may vary depending on the number of copies held by the library.

Users may use the Bluefire app to download E-book Central books to a mobile device for offline reading. The Bluefire app can be used on iOS (iPad and iPhone) and Android devices.  To download the Bluefire app simply visit the App Store or Google Play
